Short Presentation for the FRPCUG General Meeting:
Since no one has entered anything in the pbwiki for a very long time, I thought that I'd use this space to jot down some of the things that I'd like to accomplish for the meeting on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 with a short FRPCUG.pbwiki.com SHARING OF THE KEYS!
Develop Senior Center Class proposals cooperatively on the wiki!

This is the place you may ask any technical question about Computers and Software. There are very capable MEMBERS who use PC's with Windows and Linux Operating Systems and who are committed to help find answers to questions regarding these topics. To give it a try, just edit this page with your questions or repsonses... Be sure to identify yourselves.
Happy helping!
I thought that Jamie and Kyle did a superior job filling in the group on the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) for our October general meeting! Jamie will return in February, I believe to present on as yet an undisclosed topic. Rick can you help us out?
Would a couple of you members please email Jamie and Kyle and tell them they are appreciated!

Hear - Hear! in response to Jamie and Kyle's presentation. Most excellent! In regard to the March presentation, Jamie Leben volunteered to provide his presentation on Computer Security that meeting.
Jamie Leben of I-T Works will provide a live presentation of Microsoft Vista at the February meeting.

-- FRPCUG general meeting November 7, 2006 at: 7:00 p.m. at the Fort Collins Senior Center, at 1200 Raintree Drive, Fort Collins, CO 80526. Our program: Sean Reifschneider on " Virtual Computing - uses and practices"
-- Sean Reifschneider and Evelyn Mitchell co-founded Tummy.com, "a boutique Linux consulting firm located in Fort Collins... in 1995." Sean is a strong Systems Administrator and Programmer, with a passion for solving problems. Sean presented a program on Xen, a Linux Virtual Machine platform which allows multiple operating systems (OS) operating simultaneously on a single computer. This allows several separated functions to be performed, some on the Web, some on separated Local Area Networks (LAN), or simply a variety of testing runs on different operating systems for software developers.
-- Sean demonstrated the installation of Fedora Core 6 operating system on a machine in Denver, as part of the program. The process was completed in about 15-25 minutes. Questions were fielded all during Sean's presentation, and Evelyn Mitchell made notes of the the questions, organized them into groups of similar questions and projected them on the screen. As Sean answered the questions, Evelyn would type those on the screen, too, so that everyone was kept engaged in the process. It was a very clever, effective workshop approach. We all learned much!

Pulled out of the FRPCUG BBS post August 1, 2006 by jwbragonier:
We on the Board of Directors remember a time when there were youth (that's people under 40) who used to come to our meetings. We used to have lively discussions about how to keep our eye sight while staring at dancing images on lousy, flickering monitors.
Today our club seems to be more invested in the swapping of neuralgia potions and weight reduction schemes than sharing our latest cyber discoveries. Whashappenin'? What should we be doing to renovate the aging club? We need new blood on the Board, in our membership, livening up K-Byte, building the newest and greatest, hotest and best computers!
I want to be dazzled, have my socks blown off! I want to have a demo of the best stereophonic (oops, old term), high definition, high test, screeming computers available! I want to be shocked, amazed, and amused!
I will even pay a year's membership for the first, under 40, sustaining member to be brought to the club by another old _ _ _ _, member! How long do you think it'll take for this word to get out? Undecided as to how to proceed? Ask someone younger to help you to get to the meeting. Then, spring upon him/her with a membership application! If they bite, I'll pay for the first one!! (But we won't tell anyone else in the club!) Let's see how many active members that we can find!

This will be a well beaten horse by the time I'm done, but... People have widely varied ideas about the best, most meaningful programs for our club. My personal feeling is that we have good to great programs on a regular basis!
Our attendance, though better since sending the reminders out, has gone up and down depending on the weather, time of year, program announcements, size of the moon, length of hunting season, whatever is on the tube, etc. It is important for the continued success of our Club, that we know how to best plan for upcoming meetings, so that we are not spinning our wheels and can continue to build attendance and a strong educational program.
Better attendance helps to attract better program, helps to build better attendance, and younger members to enliven and sustain our club. Now, I realize that the club is about half as old as I am, so, I'm not too worried about longevity of the club, but the vitality of the club is something else again.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm not getting much more spry! Where are the students who used to come regularly, during the school year? Is holding the meeting in the Sr. Center casting a pall? What are your thoughts? Is there some reason that those who take the Sr. Center Classes don't want to come to the meetings? Are we intimidating to others? Jim B.

In response to Virginia from Front Page:
One of the things I'm pretty sure about is that continuing to do what we have been doing will not result in a demographic change of our membership. We would need to seek out younger members (It strikes me that we don't "need" a lot more older members...) and, I think, we would need ot plan some things that would be interesting and helpful to them. Perhaps we need a "computer chop shop" to build high functioning computers (though computers of high quality have never been cheaper!) If there are "gamers" among us, we should sponsor local gaming contests... that would be a hoot! I have seen recently national gaming championship winners taking home $4,000 to $10,000 in winnings and $30,000 - $50,000 in contracts with the gaming manufacturers' contracts. Even for 10-year-olds!!! It's a huge computer market of which I've had no previous knowledge. These kids know more about computers than I'll ever know and more about playing on them than I'll ever want to know. I can't imagine what they might do for a program presentation to our group, but I can imagine the incredulous reaction!
We need to keep thinking... What's entertaining, educational, and edifying in some way?

A last thought. We have people with strong computing abilities in our Club. Would any one be interested in building a broad-based community data base of property ownership, to study tax assessment patterns? Or, how about assisting the Poudre Fire Authority in analysing where hazzardous materials might be stored in the community? (This seems particularly important when PFA is making fire runs.) For fifteen years I have felt that it might be important to automate the PFA run maps with street addresses. Map Quest and Google may have this, but they don't show hydrant locations and certainly not hazzards. In 1991 the maps were not coordinated between stations, and were still done by hand. Do we have anything to offer to the community that might be of technical benefit? Anyone one interested in exploring this further?

The "Open Forum" portion of our meeting will return, too, which allows members to entertain and resolve any question that anyone wishes to have addressed. So, I'm Jim Bragonier...jump in here and respond.
-This is Jim's contribution for Mike. (I needed to verify that others could get on this wiki).
- Looking good Jim. Thanks for the all your good work! (Rick´s comment)
- Ya, Rick, ya betcha. But I was kinda hopin´ some other board members would comment just to show that they were willing to expose their typing abilities!! Anyone have thoughts how we can encourage ¨younger blood¨ to join our Club??
I finally figured out what to do to add notes. Most of the organizations I have been with seem to have the same problem of encouraging "younger blood". I trust I do not forget the next board meeting! Virginia
- Thank you for responding, Virginia. One of the things I'm pretty sure about is that continuing to do what we have been doing will not result in a change of membership. We would need to seek out younger members and, I think, have some things that would be helpful to them. Perhaps we need a "computer chop shop" to build high functioning computers (though computers of high quality have never been cheaper!)
